Tivoli tickets, explained honestly
An entrance ticket gives access to the garden, not to the rides. Here you can see what each ticket actually covers, when a Ride Pass is worth it, and when entrance and a packed lunch are enough.
Halloween in Tivoli is running now. The season runs from 2 October to 1 November 2026, and Christmas in Tivoli opens on 13 November. Read the Halloween guideUpdated October 2026

The most important things to know
The entrance is to the garden, the rides are something else.
Tivoli opened 15 August 1843 and is still a garden in the middle of the city, with the lake, flower beds, stages and lights in the evening. The garden had 4.25 million visits in 2024. What many first notice at the entrance is that Tivoli sells two things: entrance to the garden and Ride Pass for the rides. Tivoli itself writes that the Ride Pass gives access to all rides, but not to the garden.
This is why a regular entrance ticket, Copenhagen Card and hop-on hop-off package only cover the garden. Entrance and Ride Pass, Tivoli Extra and the Halloween ticket with Ride Pass cover both. And then there is the small print: in three of the ads, the list of contents mentions Ride Pass, food or scary houses, while the ticket’s own important information states that rides are not included. The important information is what applies at the entrance.

The entrance ticket gives access to the garden. Rides require a Ride Pass for unlimited rides on the same day or single-ride tickets bought in the garden.
02
Under 3 free
Children under 3 enter free with a paying adult, maximum four per adult. A Ride Pass is required for rides from age 1.
03

You may bring your own food, and non-alcoholic drinks in reusable bottles. Dogs are not allowed, except guide dogs and service dogs.
04
Who should not buy a Ride Pass?
Anyone coming for the concert, the lights, the Christmas market or an evening stroll in the garden, and anyone who will only go on a couple of rides. Individual ride tickets can be bought as you go.

When the lights are turned on
In the evening, thousands of lamps are lit. In summer there is Friday Rock, in autumn pumpkins and in winter a Christmas market; in December it gets dark from around 4 pm.
How to get there, who the tickets are for, a sample day and what to bring.
By train: Copenhagen Central Station is right opposite the entrance on Bernstorffsgade; from the platform to the gate is just a few minutes' walk.
On foot from the city centre: the main entrance at Vesterbrogade 3 is by Rådhuspladsen, at the end of Strøget.
With Copenhagen Card: the card covers both entrance and public transport in the capital area, but not the rides.
With hop-on hop-off bus: the bus stops at Copenhagen Central Station, and the package with Tivoli entrance gives re-entry with a stamp.
Small children: under 3 years old get free entrance with a paying adult (max. four per adult); a Ride Pass is required for rides from 1 year. Tivoli Ekstra is not suitable for children under 3 years.
Teenagers: on Fridays with Friday Rock, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult aged at least 25 after 17:30. Halloween scary houses are for ages 12 and up.
Wheelchair: the entrance ticket is described as wheelchair accessible, while the ad for entrance and Ride Pass states it is not suitable for wheelchair users. Tivoli has accessible toilets by the Pantomime Theatre and spaces for wheelchairs at concerts.
Dogs: are not allowed in Tivoli, except for guide dogs and service dogs.
Family day in summer: arrive at opening time with entrance ticket and Ride Pass, ride the big attractions first, packed lunch in the garden, the Tivoli Youth Guard and the Pantomime Theatre in the afternoon.
Evening for adults: entrance ticket, a walk around the lake, dinner in the garden and the lights being switched on; maybe a single ride on Rutschebanen.
Halloween: pumpkins and market in the afternoon, rides in the dark; scary houses require a separate ticket and are for ages 12 and up.
Christmas: arrive late in the afternoon when the lights are switched on, Christmas market, ice rink and æbleskiver; the rides require a Ride Pass in addition to the Christmas entrance ticket.

The rest of the city
Copenhagen by bike, past Tivoli
Tivoli is an evening or a day; the rest of Copenhagen is best seen from the cycle path. The tour starts a few minutes' walk from Tivoli’s main entrance and covers about eight flat kilometres past the city’s famous sights.
Copenhagen highlights by bike with a local guide
Vester Voldgade 2 · 3 hours · GetYourGuide
Rådhuspladsen, past Tivoli, Christiansborg, Nyhavn with a break, Amalienborg, the Little Mermaid and Rosenborg: about eight flat kilometres with a local guide. Bike, helmet and rain cover are included, and the start is a few minutes' walk from Tivoli’s main entrance.
Search for Tivoli tickets, and every result promises the same: the garden, the rides, the lights and an unforgettable day. That is true, but it rarely says at the top that the garden and the rides are two separate tickets, that small children get in free, and that you are welcome to bring a packed lunch. Here is how to read the options.
A garden from 1843 in the middle of the city
Georg Carstensen opened Tivoli on 15 August 1843 with the permission of King Christian VIII; the often-quoted reason was that when people are having fun, they are not thinking about politics. The garden is still in the same place between Vesterbrogade and Copenhagen Central Station, and it had 4.25 million visitors in 2024. Rutschebanen from 1914 still runs with a brake operator on every train, the Pantomime Theatre from 1874 still performs with characters like Pierrot and Harlequin, and the Tivoli Youth Guard, founded in 1844, marches with children aged 8 to 16. The name is borrowed from the town of Tivoli near Rome. According to many sources, Walt Disney is said to have drawn inspiration from here.
Rutschebanen from 1914: a brake operator rides on every train, around 50 km/h on a 720-metre track.
Eight tickets, and what they cover
The basic entrance ticket gives you access to the garden for one day. Entrance and Ride Pass adds unlimited rides on the same day, provided you scan the QR code and get a wristband. Tivoli Ekstra includes an Easy Food meal at a selected restaurant and a discount voucher for Little Tivoli, but is not suitable for children under 3 years. During the seasons, there is a Halloween ticket with Ride Pass and an entrance ticket for Christmas in Tivoli. Outside the garden, the Copenhagen Card Discover covers entrance and public transport, and the hop-on hop-off package covers a bus for 24 hours and entrance with re-entry. Neither of the last two covers the rides.
The fine print: the standard entrance ticket, the Halloween entrance and the Christmas entrance at GetYourGuide all have a content list that mentions Ride Pass, and some also mention food or scary houses. Their own important information states that the rides are not included. Go by the important information. If you want to go on the rides, choose a ticket where Ride Pass is in the title, or buy a Ride Pass inside the garden.
When is the Ride Pass worth it?
It depends on how many rides you actually manage to go on. With teenagers who want to ride Dæmonen, Rutschebanen and Himmelskibet again and again, the Ride Pass is the simple choice. With small children who mostly want to go on the gentle carousels, or with adults who come for the concert and the lights, an entrance ticket and a few single rides are often enough. Remember that height requirements are posted at each ride, and that some seasonal rides and Halloweens scary houses are not included in the Ride Pass. Tivoli has also not promised that all rides will be open all day: technical checks can close a ride with short notice.
You are welcome to bring your own food into Tivoli, and non-alcoholic drinks may be brought in reusable bottles.
The seasons set the day
Summer offers long evenings, Friday Rock and the garden in bloom. Halloween from 2 October to 1 November 2026 fills the garden with over 20,000 pumpkins and a Halloween market. Christmas in Tivoli from 13 November to 3 January is about the lights, the Christmas market, the ice rink and the New Year's fireworks; in December it is dark from around 4 pm, so late afternoon is the best time.
The opening hours guide has all the dates, and the ticket guide
goes through each ticket.
When the lights come on: for many guests, the evening is the reason to visit.
Direct answers to the most frequently asked questions about Tivoli.
Is there free entry to Tivoli?
Not for adults: you need an entrance ticket, a Tivoli annual pass or a card that covers entrance, such as Copenhagen Card. Children under 3 enter free with a paying adult, maximum four children under 3 per adult. Rides always require a Ride Pass or single-ride tickets on top. Entrance or Ride Pass explains the difference.
How do you enter Tivoli?
Through the main entrance at Vesterbrogade 3 by Rådhuspladsen or the entrance on Bernstorffsgade opposite Copenhagen Central Station. The ticket is scanned at the entrance; with a Ride Pass you get a wristband. Tickets are sold online, at the Service Center, at the entrances and at machines inside the garden.
When does Tivoli open in 2026 and 2027?
The 2026 summer season ran from 27 March to 20 September. Halloween in Tivoli runs 2 October - 1 November 2026, and Christmas in Tivoli 13 November 2026 - 3 January 2027. Tivoli.dk has already announced Easter 19 - 29 March 2027 and summer 30 March - 26 September 2027. The opening-hours guide has the full calendar.
Does Tivoli close in September?
The summer season ends in September (20 September in 2026), and the garden will then be closed until Halloween begins on 2 October. There is another short break between Halloween and Christmas, and after New Year, Tivoli remains closed until the Easter or summer season.
Are the rides included in the entrance ticket?
No. The entrance ticket gives access to the garden, stages and lights. The rides require a Ride Pass (unlimited rides on the same day) or individual ride tickets. Read the ad’s important information: several seasonal ads mention the Ride Pass in the content list, while the small print states that rides are not included.
Can you bring a packed lunch into Tivoli?
Yes. Tivoli states that you are welcome to bring your own food, and non-alcoholic drinks may be brought in reusable bottles; for large events such as Friday Rock, the bottles must be empty. Dogs are not allowed, except for guide dogs and service dogs.
Is Tivoli included in the Copenhagen Card?
Copenhagen Card Discover covers entrance to Tivoli, but not the rides. The card is valid for 24 - 120 hours and also includes public transport in the capital area; children aged 3-11 must have their own child card.
Why is Tivoli so famous?
Tivoli opened on 15 August 1843 and is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, still located in the middle of a major city. The Rutschebanen roller coaster from 1914 has a brake operator on every train, the Pantomime Theatre from 1874 still performs, and the garden had 4.25 million visitors in 2024.
What can you experience in Tivoli?
Rides from children’s carousels to Dæmonen, Rutschebanen and the 80-metre-high Himmelskibet, concerts and Friday Rock in summer, the Pantomime Theatre, the Tivoli Youth Guard, the gardens, the lake and the lights in the evening, plus Halloween and Christmas markets in season. The rides guide goes in depth.
Is Tivoli an Italian word, and did Tivoli inspire Disneyland?
The name comes from the town of Tivoli near Rome, known for Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana; Copenhagen’s Tivoli borrowed the name. According to many sources, Walt Disney visited Tivoli and drew inspiration from it, but this is a story, not a documented plan. If you search for “Tivoli”, a car model and a theatre in the USA also appear; they have nothing to do with the garden.
What if a ride is closed, and can I cancel?
Rides can stop with little notice for technical checks; in July 2026, several major rides were closed at once. All tickets on this page can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before via GetYourGuide. Tickets bought directly from Tivoli are dated, and an unused ticket can be moved up to 14 days after the original date.
Who is allowed in Tivoli in the evening during Friday Rock?
On Fridays with Friday Rock, guests under 16 must be accompanied by an adult aged at least 25 after 17:30, and one adult may bring up to four under-16s. The rule is stated both by Tivoli and in ticket listings.
